Two from Osceola County named to Student Leaders program
Today, July 27, is National Intern Day, a proper day to announce four Central Florida students, including two rising seniors from Osceola County, were selected for the Bank of America Student Leaders program. It is an eight-week paid summer internship providing students with first-hand experience in serving their communities. As part of the program, the students will develop leadership and practical workforce skills while working with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Central Florida.
As a School Advisory Council member for Poinciana High School, Keenan Lewis learned to consider the views of parents, teachers and the student body in supporting key projects and initiatives across campus. His leadership allowed him to organize the first-ever “Multicultural Night” at the school. This two-part event brought together students from all grade levels, and their families, in a celebration of a large variety of cultures.
After she was elected student government president, Tohopekaliga High’s Sharon Sanju learned the power of initiative as she helped enhance the high school experience for her peers, leading the coordination of school-wide events and initiatives. Sharon also leveraged her leadership skills to serve as the vice president of the Asian American Student Association, where she connects with her Indian heritage and guides the group to help share and enjoy cultural experiences together.
Prior to the start of school, Student Leaders will travel to Washington D.C. for a week-long, all-expenses-paid, national leadership summit focused on the power of cross-sector collaboration and community advocacy.
Church of Latter Day Saints distributing food to Council on Aging
In an effort to better help those in need, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints has partnered with several Osceola County charities to support the community, including the Osceola Council on Aging. The COA, which operates Osceola’s Meals on Wheels program and provides thousands of meals to the elderly and disabled each week, has a longtime relationship with the Church of Jesus Christ and the need to help struggling families during the summer months.
The church unloaded four tons of food at the Council on Friday morning. Over the next 12 months, tons of food and household supplies will be delivered to the COA to help support its food pantry and community support programs.
“Warren Hougland at the council is working with me to complete the shipment, and it’s part of a larger partnership we’ve agreed with the COA for the next year to supply similar monthly amounts,” said Sam Hought of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
“Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike” Friday to benefit Council on Aging
An upcoming production of “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike,” a Tony Award-winning play by Christopher Durang, will take place on Friday, July 28 at 7 p.m. for the public at the Osceola Council on Aging at 700 Generation Point Kissimmee.
Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike is a hilarious comedy that revolves around three middle-aged siblings. Vanya and Sonia, who have spent their lives caring for their parents, find their routine disrupted when their glamorous movie-star sister, Masha, arrives with her new beau, Spike. With a soothsaying cleaning woman, an aspiring actress, and family plans in disarray, the stage is set for a laugh-out-loud ruckus.
The cast includes Ken Nesbit as Vanya, Michael Duncan as Spike, Jennifer Rea as Sonia and Freya Hunt as Masha.
As part of bringing the show to Kissimmee to benefit the Council on Aging, ARTS Unlimited will put on a morning performance exclusively for Council seniors, and donate 20% of ticket sales to the Council, and collaboration on promotion and ticket sales.
Tickets are $25, but there’s a “Buy one, get another for $10” promotion if purchased in advance online at httos:// artsu.yapsody.com (promo code VANYA).
