Six from Osceola earn National Merit Scholarships
The National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) announced Tuesday that six of the 2,600 winners of National Merit Scholarships have been awarded to Osceola County students.
These awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at the institution financing the scholarship.
The awardees are:
Sarah York, Champions Gate, Celebration High School, attending New College of Florida to study Archaeology;
Emily Chesnut, Kissimmee, Poinciana High School, attending the University of Central Florida to study Neuroscience;
Evan Halperin, Kissimmee, Celebration High, attending the University of Florida to study Computer Science;
Sean McBride, Kissimeee, Osceola County School For the Arts, attending the University of South Florida to study Music;
Nicolas Riveros, Kissimmee, Celebration High, attending UF to study Mechanical Engineering;
Zachary T. Zelmanski, Kissimmee, Celebration High, attending UF to study Computer Science.
Update on May 13 Vineland Road traffic fatality
The Florida Highway Patrol is still looking for tips or details into a hit-and-run car-versuspedestrian accident that occurred on Vineland Road at Kyngs Heath Road on May 13, that is now a fatality.
A 39-yeard-old Kissimmee woman involved passed away on May 16 at the hospital.
New gas station surveillance video attached suggests that the time of collision was at approximately 5:36 a.m. It appears that the suspect vehicle is a white Honda CRV between the years of 2012-2016 that is missing the passenger side mirror.
The vehicle was headed northbound on Vineland when an unknown portion of the vehicle struck the woman. The vehicle left the scene, and the pedestrian was transported Osceola Regional Medical Center, FHP spokesperson Lt. Tara Crescenzi said. It is currently unknown was the pedestrian was doing, such as walking or standing
