News Briefs — Gun violence vigil Monday; Boys & Girls Club volunteer hours

Gun violence candlelight vigil Monday evening

A candlelight vigil to honor those lost to gun violence will be held on Monday at 6 p.m. on the steps of the Jon B. Morgan Osceola County Courthouse.

Those expected to participate include Kissimmee City Commissioner Angela Eady, Equality Florida, the NAACP Osceola County Chapter, Kissimmee Police, Moms Demand Action (a “gun sense” group), Florida Rising, Congressman Soto’s Office and the Osceola Young Democrats.

The event comes on the heels of a shooting in the Pine Hills area of Orlando, and the Florida Legislature potentially taking up a bill to allow “constitutional carry” in Florida, which would do away with the permitting process to carry and conceal a fiream.

“Not only that, we lost the son of a local football coach in recent months to gun violence,” Eady said. “There’s been quite a few incidents that have affected us right here. But, keep in mind, this is a nationwide issue. The goal of Monday is to find solutions close to home. If we start with one city, one town at a time, we can be be a part of the solution.

“If not, this could be just the beginning of further violence.”
