Kissimmee now taking applications for Civilian Police Oversight Board

Earlier in July, the Kissimmee City Commission approved the formation of a Civilian Police Oversight Board, a panel tasked with reviewing Kissimmee Police Department policies and procedures and aims to strengthen transparency, accountability, and public trust in local law enforcement.

The city is now accepting applications for the five civic-minded individuals those who want to serve on that board. The application system is open at kissimmee.gov/advisoryboards for the next 30 days or until all of the seats are filled.

Those who wish to sit on that board must live, work or own a business in the City of Kissimmee, and not currently hold or be running for an elected office (If a member later qualifies as a candidate, they must resign from the board).

All five members of the board will be appointed by the Police Chief Chuck Broadway. One seat is reserved for a retired law enforcement officer. While members will help determine future meeting dates and times, the board is expected to convene at least four times per year.

According to the city, "This advisory board will serve as a public forum for input on policing matters, helping to ensure open dialogue between the community and the Kissimmee Police Department. Board members will meet quarterly to review and provide input on departmental policies and procedures, with the goal of promoting continuous improvement and public confidence in the department’s work."

Initial appointments will be staggered: three members will serve two-year terms, and two members will serve one-year terms. Board members may serve a maximum of three consecutive two-year terms.
