The Florida Highway Patrol has confirmed the age and gender of a child hit and killed by a vehicle on west U.S. Highway 192 Wednesday night.
A 10-year-old girl trying to cross the road was hit and killed at about 9:15 p.m. by a passenger vehicle driven by a 71-year-old Kissimmee man.
According to an FHP report, witnesses stated the girl was among several children who were attempting to cross U.S. 192 to the north side of the road near Avalon Road from the south side of the road, according to authorities. The children were not crossing at an intersection or a crosswalk. The girl was taken to a hospital, where she died, FHP said.
Authorities have not released the identity of the driver or the child. The crash remains under investigation.
