Death toll climbs in Uvalde, Texas school shooting

In another horrific showing of gun violence at a school, the death toll has climbed to 19 students and two teachers after a deadly mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, as confirmed by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and other officials.

Police officials have confirmed that the 18-year-old suspect identified by Abbott as Salvador Ramos, a U.S. citizen and a student at Uvalde High School, is also dead, and there are several other injuries among students and adults. The incident occurred just after 11:32 a.m. Central time. The school was placed on lockdown minutes later. Abbott originally said that two were killed.

They also confirmed the shooter acted alone.

"He shot and killed horrifically and incomprehensibly students and killed a teacher," Abbott said, also confirming the suspect also shot his grandmother before entering the school and again opening fire. There is no information on her condition. He had no information on any connection between the shootings. "Our job is to address what happened at this scene, and ensure incidents like this never happen again."

Those on scene report that U.S. Border Patrol, FBI and SWAT members are on the scene.

Police are now scouring the suspect's social media account to find out more about his background.

The school has 2nd, 3rd and 4th graders. Other children in the school were transported to a local civic center to exit the scene to be reunited with parents.

Uvalde is a suburb of San Antonio of about 15,000 people, about 60 miles north of the Mexican border.
