Last week, local chapters of the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR), the Joshua Stevens Chapter of St. Cloud and Abraham Salle Chapter of Celebration, presented 5,900 Constitution booklets to the Osceola County School District ahead of Constitution Day on Sunday, Sept. 17.
Each fifth grade student in the district will receive a copy of this booklet to utilize in their social studies lessons during the week of Constitution Day.
In 1955, the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) petitioned Congress with a resolution to designate September 1723 as Constitution Week and was signed into law by President Dwight D. Eisenhower on August 2, 1956. The goal of NSDAR is to encourage study and educate the public about the Constitution.
The U.S. Department of Education requires that schools provide a course to all students on the Constitution during the week of Constitution Day — but there are no required resources for the teachers to use. This is the third year Joshua Stevens Chapter and Abraham Salle Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution have provided the Constitution Week booklets to aid in the fifth-graders’ studies.
Constitution Week Co-Chair Sandy Vogelpohl of Joshua Stevens NSDAR worked with Constitution For the People and their President, Joseph Cofield to join in the partnership for the third year.
“I am proud to be on the Constitution Week Committee to provide these important booklets to our fifth grade students,” Vogelpohl said.
The Joshua Stevens Chapter will kick off Constitution Week on Sept. 17 at St. Cloud Fire Rescue Department with a bell ringing ceremony at 4 p.m. Deputy Chief/Fire Marshal Richard Tonks will ring the ceremonial bell 236 times to commemorate the 236th anniversary of the signing of the Constitution.
At the City of St. Cloud Council meeting Sept. 14, Mayor Nathan Blackwell of the City of St. Cloud will be signing a Constitution Week Proclamation and present it to Joshua Stevens Chapter Regent Kimberly Tennison, Chapter Board Members and the Chapter’s Constitution Week Committee.
