COUNCIL'S CORNER: Celebrating National Giving Month

December is observed as National Giving Month, or, alternatively, the “Month of Giving.” This tradition gives us a time to recognize the spirit of generosity, philanthropy, and gifting for the betterment of society.

Incepted in 2012 by the United Foundations and the 92nd Street YMCA in New York City, the month-long observance recognizes those who support their communities, whether it be through education, unmet health and wellness needs, social service support, and even environmental necessities. It is also a time to celebrate the spirit of those who make it all happen, including volunteers, donors, foundations, and corporations who focus on social responsibility.

Of course, December has been a time for “gifting” for hundreds of years. So, what better time than National Giving Month for the Osceola Council on Aging (OCOA) to be chosen as a recipient of the Light the World, National Giving Machine initiative. This unique endeavor is part of the annual Light the World Christmas program sponsored by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Central Florida was selected as one of 108 locations worldwide to receive a Giving Machine during the 2024 Holiday season. Gifting machines will be located on the second level of the Altamonte Mall on State Road 436 in Seminole County until Jan. 1. It's the only one in Central Florida and one of only two in the state of Florida.

The machines offer patrons an easy opportunity to support a wide variety of local charities. Items will include personal articles such as socks and underwear; household items like bedding and cleaning supplies; and toys, puzzles, crafts, and even baby essentials such as strollers, cribs, and car seats.

Education and literacy program opportunities are also offered, along with computers, internet access services, pet care and emergency necessities such as medical alert systems.

“Our Giving Machines are customized vending machines which provide a unique, memorable, and philanthropic way for the public to support those in need,” said Emily Munns, JustServe Specialist Central Florida, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. “The variety of items and price points assures anyone can donate, starting from $5 up to $250.”

The program was introduced seven years ago and is part of the Church’s “Light the World” global initiative. The program is now available in 13 countries, including the United Sates, Canada, Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Panama, England, Kenya, Hong Kong, Philippines, Australia, and New Zealand.

“With our Light the World program, we companion the efforts of participating local nonprofit partners, such as the Osceola Council on Aging. Their social service organization dedicates their lives to serving Osceola seniors, individuals with disabilities, and disadvantaged families. We are honored and privileged to support their valuable mission,” Munns added.

Through National Giving machines, Light the World has donated more than $32 million dollars to 250 charities globally. The church covers operational, administrative, logistical, and all advertising costs, so 100% of donations are given to the various chosen charities.

So if you are looking for a meaningful way to give back to the OCOA this holiday season, stop by the Giving Machines at the Altamonte Mall. The machines accept credit cards, debit cards and mobile payment services. Donations can also be made to the OCOA, online through the initiative at www.lighttheworld.org/give.
