Outgoing interim Chief Anzueto shared results of his KPD evaluation
At the end of a lengthy press release the city of Kissimmee issued Wednesday night after the close of business, it announced it has narrowed down its search for a new police chief to two finalists.
Clermont Police Chief Charles "Chuck" Broadway and retired Orlando Police Chief Orlando Rolon are being invited to take part in a second round of interviews, the city said, with a final decision to be made by City Manager Mike Steigerwald sometime this month.
The one chosen will succeed former Deputy Chief Betty Holland, who resigned amidst a State Attorney's investigation into an April 2023 excessive use of force case. Robert Anzueto, who came from the Orange County Sheriff's Office to serve as the interim chief and lead the Kissimmee Police Department's response to the concerns raised by State Attorney Office’s investigation into the use of force case, has headed back to his Sheriff's office. In the meantime, Wilson Munoz is serving as Acting Chief of Police until the permanent hire is made.
"This search is about more than finding a leader; it’s about ensuring the next Chief will continue the work that Interim Chief Anzueto has begun," Steigerwald said in Wednesday night's release. "We are looking for someone who will lead with transparency, build on the momentum of reform, and ensure that KPD remains a department that the community continues to trust and respect."
Since coming on board on Oct. 24, 2024, Anzueto worked to address the Grand Jury's allegations against KPD and recommend improvements to processes, such as evaluating command staff, training and policy updates (including those regarding internal investigations), strengthening the oversight and accountability of the Internal Affairs division, and complying with state-level reporting requirements.
“When I arrived in October, I wasn’t sure what to expect. What I’ve seen over the past four months has exceeded my expectations in the most positive way,” said Interim Chief Anzueto. “The men and women of KPD have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to keeping Kissimmee safe, and I am proud of the progress we’ve made. The morale is high, and employees appreciate the transparency and changes we’ve implemented.”
