Juneteenth commemorates the liberation of enslaved people in the U.S. It was first celebrated on June 19, 1865, in Texas a few months after the Civil War ended and the Emancipation Proclamation could be communicated to the corners of the country.
The celebration was back on Saturday in Kissimmee, where a community of African Americans came together. Today is the federal celebration, and a holiday.
With food vendors, black-owned products and art and community resources on display, it was a holiday dedicated to education and celebration of a cultural past, present and future.
