Coming out of the Thanksgiving holiday, when AAA said over two million Floridians would hit the road -- and gas stations -- to visit friends and family, gas prices around the state are primed to dip under the $3 dollar mark as a statewide average.
Sitting at $3.01 as of Sunday for a state average, those averages locally have actually gone under $3 as "two-somethings" are in plentiful supply around Osceola, where the average is now $2.96 per gallon of regular unleaded.
Locally, that's down 30 cents from a month ago, and 40 cents from a year ago. Last year, Thanksgiving travelers paid $3.41 per gallon. The price was $3.35/g in 2021. That's still higher than the during the pandemic and the immediate aftermath ($2.03/g during the COVID Thanksgiving of 2020), but since AAA says the weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas are generally a low-demand month for gas consumption, prices should continue to trend lower in the short term.
"A recent drop in oil prices and the seasonal downturn in fuel demand have enabled gas prices to move lower in time for the holidays," said Mark Jenkins, spokesman, AAA - The Auto Club Group. "Gas prices should remain low through the holidays, unless there's an unexpected spike in oil prices or disruption to the domestic gasoline supply line."
