The inaugural VFW Post #3227 “Drive to Thrive” benefit golf tournament will be held at the Royal St. Cloud Golf Links on May 15, with an 8 a.m. shotgun start.
The tournament’s proceeds will be used toward the renovation of their Post building at 915 New York Ave. This building is steep in history. The VFW has occupied this space for over 75 years.
Its history dates back to 1889, when it was known as the Sugar Belt Railway. Trains from this depot transported sugar cane and citrus between Narcoossee and Kissimmee. The St. Cloud sugar mill was capable of producing over 200 tons of sugar each day. The success of the Sugar Belt Railway changed the local economy, and by 1909 it became an economic city staple.
The Depot was built as a Welcome Center for those new to St. Cloud. As part of that, the women of St. Cloud began placing books and reading material at the Depot. This act, unknowingly, became the City’s first public library. By 1925, The Depot supplied businesses and residents with a variety of goods. Their financial success allowed the city to renovate the Depot from a wood frame to a new brick building. The Veterans of Foreign Wars purchased this building in 1943 after the Depot and Sugar Railway ended their operations.
VFW Post #3227 has served as a place for those who have served our country to socialize and build friendships. In partnering with local businesses and organizations the Post continues to continue the legacy of the Sugar Belt Railway Depot. They host Bingo nights and Poker Runs to benefit Osceola Meals on Wheels.
“We decided to do some fundraising this year to restore the inside of The Canteen. Right know, we have a drop ceiling and we want to restore the original look,” said Post Commander Rafael DeJesus. “Normally we don’t do fundraisers, we have never done anything like this before.”
There are still spots left for sponsors, some including play in the tournament. If you would like to secure your spot or make a donation by May 15, go to www.drivetothrive3227.com.
