This volatility in the gas price market is a sign of the season.
They tick up at Thanksgiving. They dip in the three to four weeks before Christmas as travel falls off a bit before people head out to see family again.
On Friday morning, the average gas price in Florida moved to $2.99 per gallon, the lowest daily average price in almost a year (Jan. 22, 2024). Then, just ahead of the weekend, the jumped 10 to 20 cents depending on the location, and going into the new week the new average is $3.10, a half cent less than a week ago and 4 cents less than last month, yet it's 5 cents more than this time last year.
"Florida gas prices don't hold still for very long," said Mark Jenkins, spokesman, AAA - The Auto Club Group. "The state average moved lower through the week. By Friday, it dropped below $3, but rebounded through the weekend. Gas prices typically move lower through the winter months, because of colder weather, lower demand, and gasoline supply gains. These factors will likely help push gasoline back below $3 a gallon this month."
In Osceola County, we enter the week at an average price of $3.17 for a gallon of regular unleaded -- we're usually under the state average, and we're even more than the average in Miami-Dade County ($3.16) heading into this week. Even with the big jump going into Saturday, we're only down a nickel on the week thanks to a few pennies-per-day drops in the early part of the week. A year ago this time, we were at $2.95, AAA's Gas Tracker app shows.
IF you want cheap gas, you have to drive over five hours to the Panhandle west of Tallahassee, were prices range from $2.79-2.92.
