Smart Irrigation Month is recognized in July to raise public awareness of water wise landscaping and irrigation methods to promote efficient water use, save on utility bills, ensure lasting green spaces and support the sustainability of our community. This initiative was originated by the Irrigation Association and now spans across the country through campaigns working to ensure the correct irrigation technology is being used at the right time.
To minimize water waste and reduce your water bill, irrigation systems require regular maintenance to keep them effective. These systems can be damaged or misused which leads to costly leaks. On average, irrigation systems account for around 50-75% of a home’s monthly water usage. More plants die from overwatering than underwatering and by properly maintaining your irrigation system, it can stay at an optimal efficiency level to benefit your bill and your lawn.
Have your system periodically audited. An irrigation audit and uniformity tests can verify areas are being evenly and appropriately watered. This will also provide the information needed to make any necessary adjustments.
Monthly Tips:
• Adjust sprinkler heads. Correct obstructions that may be preventing sprinklers from distributing water evenly. Adjust the sprinkler head positions and spray patterns to avoid wasting water on sidewalks and to provide necessary clearance over growing plants.
• Check the pressure. Pressure changes over time and can negatively affect the system’s efficiency. If the pressure is too high, an abundance of water is applied quickly – causing runoff.
• Inspect for leaks. A contractor can perform regular maintenance checks for leaks, broken or clogged sprinkler heads and other problems.
Upgrades:
• Rain sensors. These inexpensive sensors can be fitted to nearly any irrigation system and work to help save water by turning off the system during rainy weather. In fact, it is Florida law to have a working rain sensor.
• Smart controllers. Weather or soil moisture based controllers evaluate the present conditions and then automatically adjust the irrigation schedule according to the specific landscape needs. These controllers take the guesswork out of watering and can save water and money over time.
Recently, the South Florida Water Management District approved an irrigation schedule for St. Cloud, which will be uniting with Toho this fall, to help with the increased growth in the area. The schedule can be found at https://www.stcloudfl.gov/1683/Watering-Schedules. You can also visit our Ways to Conserve section on www.tohowater.com to learn more about your watering days and times.
Need Assistance? Our Water Conservation Department can assist with any further questions. The team can be contacted at 407-944-5124 or by emailing waterconservation@tohowater.com. They can determine whether an evaluation on your irrigation system is needed. During the evaluation, an inspection for leaks and efficiency will be conducted free of charge. The owner will then be advised on any repairs that need to be made to ensure the system is running efficiently. During the evaluation, your irrigation timer will be set to run correctly.
