Local outdoor activity ideas to try this Fall

Have you noticed? Autumn is finally here! Take advantage of the cooling temperatures and enjoy an outdoor activity this week.

Is there a hobby you’ve always wanted to try? A state park or lake you’ve never seen? Whether you prefer a moment of peaceful solitude or a day of active family fun, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the nature that Osceola County has to offer.

Osceola County Parks: Osceola County is rich in parks and natural areas. For a peaceful stroll and wildlife viewing try Split Oak Forest Wildlife Area or Lake Lizzie Conservation Area. If you want to get on the water, you can go kayaking at Shingle Creek Regional Park. With over 40 county parks and recreational facilities, there is something for everyone. Visit https://www.osceola.org/agencies-departments/parks/ for a complete list of the county’s parks.

Bird Watching:  Bird watching is a peaceful way to enjoy nature and learn something new. Grab a pair of binoculars and a field guide, and see what birds you can spot. Fall is the perfect time to start birding. By the end of November, large numbers of birds from further north have moved into the state to spend the winter here. If backyard bird watching is more up your alley, add some native, bird-friendly plants to your landscape. Native plants provide birds with food and shelter and will entice the birds to come to you!

Boating and Fishing: Take advantage of Osceola County’s lakes by going on a boating or fishing trip. Don’t forget to clean your boat to decrease the spread of invasive plants like hydrilla and water hyacinth. These invasive plants crowd out native plants and are very costly to control.

Nature Journaling: Take a moment out of your day to observe the plants and wildlife in your yard. Keep track of what you see in a journal, and maybe even draw a quick picture. Spending just 20 minutes outside can improve our mood and decrease stress levels. Nature journaling at home is an easy way to enjoy a moment of solitude in the beautiful autumn weather.
