First off, a couple of facts
In Osceola County, 54% of water use is spent on irrigation. According to the University of Florida, at least 50% of that is wasted due to overwatering or having a faulty irrigation system. For these reasons, Toho Water Authority (Toho) recognizes Smart Irrigation Month every July.
Smart Irrigation Month is a time to highlight the social, economic, and environmental benefits of efficient irrigation practices. It aims to shed light on new irrigation technologies and innovations. The Irrigation Association dedicates July to recognizing the importance of efficient irrigation and those in the industry who make it all possible. This year’s theme, “We Are Smart Irrigation,” celebrates the contributions of individuals behind efficient irrigation systems and the wise use of water. Toho is proud to recognize our employees and their daily efforts to provide effective irrigation services to the community.
Why is it important?
Smart Irrigation Month holds significance as it educates about the substantial advantages of efficient irrigation methods and technologies. By advocating for smart irrigation practices, this initiative helps communities conserve water, reduce water bills and safeguard the environment. These practices have far-reaching impacts socially, economically and environmentally.
Socially, smart and efficient irrigation supports the development of thriving green spaces and infrastructure, positively influencing people's well-being by enhancing moods and reducing stress levels.
Economically, smart irrigation practices are increasingly vital amidst rising water costs. They not only save money by minimizing water expenses but also prevent the frequent replacement of landscaping and infrastructure damaged by overwatering.
Environmentally, smart irrigation techniques prevent overwatering by delivering precise amounts of water at optimal times, thereby conserving water.
Overall, smart irrigation plays a crucial role in promoting water conservation and enhancing global irrigation efficiency.
Looking for ways to practice smart irrigation? Here are some practical tips:
- Regularly inspect your irrigation system for leaks and adjust sprinklers to ensure they water only the necessary areas and not sidewalks and driveways.
- Make sure your rain sensor is working to prevent watering when it’s raining.
- Opt for Florida-friendly landscaping, which requires less water. Learn more about suitable plant choices at https://ffl.ifas.ufl.edu/.
- Adopt a cycle and soak irrigation method to maximize water absorption and minimize runoff. Do this by running your sprinklers for five-minute sessions with time in between to allow water to soak into the soil instead of watering for 15 consecutive minutes.
