Drinking Water Week

Drinking Water Week was celebrated May 1-7, 2022, to recognize the importance of water and water infrastructure. For over 40 years, the American Water Works Association (AWWA) and its members have celebrated Drinking Water Week – a unique opportunity for both water professionals and the communities they serve to recognize the vital role water plays in our daily lives.

Toho Water Authority’s Board of Supervisors officially adopted a proclamation for Drinking Water Week. Toho is observing Drinking Water Week by: recognizing the valuable role tap water plays in everyday life, the infrastructure required to move it to and from homes and businesses and the vital work that water professionals accomplish daily to ensure the delivery of safe, quality tap water.

Toho Water Authority encourages customers to recognize their tap water is: “There When You Need It.” Water professionals at Toho and at water utilities, government entities and environmental advocate organizations work to guarantee that our tap water is readily available for hygienic and drinking purposes.

Where is tap water from?

In Osceola County there is one of the largest pristine reservoirs of fresh groundwater in the whole country, the Floridan Aquifer. Water from this aquifer is consistently high quality and used as the source of drinking water for the Toho Water Authority water system. The aquifer is replenished with rainwater and is naturally filtered through hundreds of feet of sand and rock. Because of its high quality, the water we use needs little to no treatment other than aeration to remove hydrogen sulfide (rotten egg odor) and is chlorinated for disinfection.

Ensuring Quality

Before water leaves any of Toho Water Authority’s water plants, it is monitored to verify that it fits all of the state and federal drinking water standards. After the water is sent out, lab testing continues daily throughout our service area for quality assurance.

There When You Need It

We use water in multiple ways daily through hygiene practices, cooking, cleaning, drinking and many more. No matter the weather, there are hardworking water professionals braving the elements to maintain all the infrastructure needed to ensure high-quality drinking water is “There When You Need It.”

For Drinking Water Week, remember to drink water! The U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine determined that a daily fluid intake of about 15.5 cups for men and about 11.5 cups for women is needed. Water increases energy and relieves fatigue, keeps muscles healthy, boosts the immune system and so much more.

Toho Water Authority works diligently every day to provide our community with the best water quality possible and we encourage consumers to learn more about the importance of water.
