Maybe there’s something to this global warming. It’s been a long time since we went through January without a frost.  It has been cool enough to have water temperatures drop into the low 60s, but by the end of the week water temperatures were near 70.  That should get the bass back in the spawning mood.

2 team state champs among contenders at Osceola, St. Cloud

Many of Florida’s best high school wrestlers come to Osceola County Friday and Saturday for the 3A-2 (at Osceola High) and 2A-2 (at St. Cloud High) regional meets.

The top four wrestlers from each weight class at last week’s district meets advanced to the regionals.

Even when Poinciana jumped to a 12-point first-quarter lead, Gateway Coach Bob Baker remained calm Tuesday in the 7A District 5 basketball quarterfinal at the Panthers’ John Ramirez gym.

“One thing I’ll give our kids credit for is that they keep their poise,” Baker said. “We’ve got a lot of experience out there, and I guess I just decided that at this point of the season, they know what to do. It was just a matter of waiting for them to do it.”

Poinciana has a new football coach – Jeff Mathis, formerly the coach at Coral Springs Coral Glades High in Broward County.

Mathis, 33, will be at Poinciana Monday to begin his new job. He will teach math.

In a game that had state championship level intensity, East Ridge  rallied from a five-point fourth-quarter deficit to edge Osceola, 58-55, Thursday in a 7A-5 girls district basketball tournament semifinal at the OHS gym.

In a season marked by comeback after comeback, the Harmony boys’ soccer team could not muster one last rally, ending their season with a 2-0 loss to Daytona Beach Seabreeze in the quarterfinals of the Class 4A-2 regional tournament Wednesday at Longhorns field.
