Kowboys wrestler was undefeated Class 3A 195-pound champion

It’s hard to have a much better senior year than the one that Osceola High wrestler Chris Pagan had.

First, the Kowboys standout won the Class 3A 195-pound state wrestling championship in February, capping a perfect 51-0 season.

Former track coach and athletic director Mal Harpell was honored in a surprise ceremony Thursday when the Poinciana track complex was named for him. Joining the celebration, standing from left, are Don Smith, John Blumberg, Mary Ann Harpell, Mal Harpell, Principal Belynda Pinkston, incoming Principal Pete Hodges and boys track coach Bryan McLoughlin. Celebration’s David Akins persevered through dreary weather conditions to win the Class 3A state pole vaulting championship at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville. Akins cleared 14-6.

Rain hampered the performances of many of the county’s athletes competing at the Class 3A and Class 4A state track meets in Jacksonville last week, but it didn’t stop Celebration senior pole vaulter David Akins from winning the Class 3A state championship.
