The Osceola Center for the Arts hosted an art reception and awards ceremony for its September exhibition, Celebrating Hispanic Artists & Culture, on Tuesday, Sept. 7. The exhibition, which will run through Sept. 28, showcases the work of 24 Florida artists with 41 works including painting, sculpture, photography, drawing and mixed media.
“Artists born in the U.S.A. and around the world from as far as Argentina and Spain submitted a wide variety of artwork for this growing event,” Director of Visual Arts Jules Davidson said. “This was a great opportunity to share and celebrate Hispanic/Latino heritage through the arts here in Osceola County.”
Awards were handed out with the help of state representatives Darren Soto and Mike Horner, Consul of Mexico Alberto Fierro, County Commissioner John Quiñones and Bill Hansen of the Hispanic Business Council to the following winners:
Best of Show ($100) – Orestes Jesús González, “Ciudad en Rojo,” painting
First-place ($75) – Michael A. Pino, “Untitled,” photography
Second-place ($50) – Ana Caravias, “The Adoration Maji,” 2-D ceramics
Third-place ($25) – Felipe Ponzoa, “HD Live Oak,” graphite/drawing
Honorable mentions went to Gerardo Lopez, “Popotillo Art,” wood inlay; Jesús “Pascual” Garcia, “Dancer,” oil painting; and Rosio Lainez, “Remembering,” painting.
As part of the Hispanic Month celebration, also featured at the center is a special exhibition of Mexican art and photography honoring Mexico’s bicentennial celebration. The exhibit will be on display through Sept. 28 in the center’s community room. The exhibition is sponsored by El Osceola Star newspaper and the Mexican Consulate in Orlando. The collections presented are “Mexico 2010: A vision of the 21st century” and “UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Mexico,” art from Artist Roberto Gonzalez and the “Exposition Jose Nuño Traveling Bicentennial Packed Art.”
