The Osceola Center for the Arts hosted Congressman Bill Posey’s first Congressional Art Competition, titled “An Artistic Discovery” for high school students on May 15.

The competition drew 84 entries from students across the 15th Congressional District, which includes Osceola, Brevard, Indian River and Polk counties.
“At the root of all success in life lies creativity,” Posey said. “I’m proud of the effort put forth by every student who accepted the challenge and entered the competition this year. Central Florida is home to some truly talented young artists.
“I want to thank everyone who helped coordinate and sponsor the competition:  Brevard Culture Alliance, Bright House Networks, Art Expressions, Southwest Airlines and Savannah College of Art and Design. I also want to thank the judges and, of course, the staff of the Osceola Center for the Arts for volunteering their time to inspire a new generation of young artists.”
The competition began in 1982 to provide an opportunity for members of Congress to encourage and recognize the artistic talents of their young constituents. Since then, more than 650,000 high school students have been involved with the nationwide  competition.
“This is a great example of community spirit and involvement for visual arts in Florida’s 15th District, with the combined efforts of Congressman Posey, his staff, the teachers, sponsors and these talented students – over 80 pieces of artwork were on display,” Center Director of Visual Arts Jules Davidson said.
State Rep. Mike Horner, R-Kissimmee, who was in attendance, said, “I am so pleased to learn that the students were given this opportunity and that two Osceola County students have been awarded national recognition.”
