BELL - Mrs. Sarah J. (Betty) Bell, 89, of Auburn, PA., passed away Wednesday, December 23, 2009.
Sarah was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on November 14, 1920, the daughter of the late Horace and Sarah (Street) Jones of Gwynedd, PA.
She was preceeded in death by a son Robert Allen; brother Horace S. Jones and a granddaughter, Tia Louise. She was the beloved wife of Rev. Dr. James R. Bell.
Sarah was a graduate of Ambler High School 1938 and Abington Memorial Hospital School of Nursing as a Registered Nurse in 1941. Sarah was in the Army Nurse Corps of WWII and served with the 144th General  Hospital Unit in Myitkyna, Burma. She was honorably discharged with one battle star in 1945. Sarah was a life member of VFW Post 129 in Pottsville, PA. As a civilian nurse, she worked at Chestnut Hill Hospital and as a school nurse at Lankanau School, Philadelphia, PA.
Sarah was very active in the First Presbyterian Church in Flourtown, PA, as a teacher and counselor of the children and young people. In Pottsville, PA she served as an honorary Rotarian and was a Paul Harris Fellow with three sapphires.
For twenty years Sarah and her husband were active tour organizers and leaders. Taking advantage of study leaves and vacations, they led groups of church friends through the Holy Land, Egypt, Asia Minor, Scandinavia, the U.S.A, Mexico, Guatemala, Japan, Korea, Australia, New Zealand, traveling to over fifty countries. She was a wonderful leader and caregiver.
Surviving, in addition to Sarah's husband Jim, are two daughters, Sandra Smyth of Fairfield, CT, and Elizabeth Kessler of Frackville, PA; two sons, James Renwick Jr. of St. Cloud, FL and John Mark of Ambler, PA; a sister, Virginia Cragg of Maple Glenn, PA and a brother, John W. Jones of Sellerville, PA; seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Parkinsons Disease Foundation, 1359 Broadway, Suite 1509, New York, NY 10018.
Inurnment of cremains will be held at a later date in Flourtown, PA.
