More than $128,000 was raised Saturday for Give Kids The World during its annual Gingerbread Run 5K, a fundraising effort to provide weeklong, cost-free vacations to kids with life-threatening illnesses.

More than 1,200 participants walked, strolled or rolled through the whimsical 70-acre property in the sold-out event, past the Ice Cream Palace, the Gingerbread House restaurant and through the Fairy Tale Forrest, which includes a snoring tree. This was the event’s fourth year.

Kangaroo Express convenience stores were the top fundraising team with $16,200 raised with the help of 121 supporters.

Additionally, the individual top fundraiser was Joseph Alvarez, who raised more than $7,500 with the help of 31 supporters.

Participants were treated to a Zumba warm-up, character appearances from the GKTW mascots, Nickelodeon and DreamWorks, a slime show by Nickelodeon and a Kidz Zone with McGruff the Crime Dog, face painting, balloon animals and the Oscar Meyer Weiner Mobile.

Give Kids The World has hosted more than 118,000 families from all 50 states and more than 70 counties in the more than 25 years it has been granting wishes for children with life-threatening illnesses.
