Jacque Mitchell
Fishin’ Fun

I suppose most of you noticed that the mornings were a little bit cooler earlier this week.  I was running my boat across Toho at 6:45 a.m. on Tuesday morning and I kind of wished I had worn a long-sleeve shirt.  The temperature was 65 degrees and actually it felt pretty good.
I was surprised at how many boats I saw fishing for specs.  That morning I saw seven boats around marker 26. Some boats were east of Makinson Island and some were on the north side.
I saw several nice specs being put in the boat.  Some fishermen were trolling and a few were anchored.
Bass fishing still seems to be on the upswing.  I can usually go out for about four hours and catch anywhere from 10 to 20 bass.  Wednesday morning we put 18 in the boat.  We had one over 4 pounds and one over 6 pounds.
Most of the fish I’m catching are coming on top water lures early in the morning and soft plastics after that. I’ve been throwing a 6-inch speed worm mostly.
The level of the water has come up some and there are a few places I’ve found where I can actually fish back inside the Kissimmee grass. If you can get through the hydrilla you should find some bass willing to eat.
I’m just afraid when the water levels go down again, you won’t be able to get through the hydrilla. In November, about 5,000 acres of Lake Toho will be sprayed, which should help in some areas.
More spraying will follow in February.
