Jacque Mitchell
Fishin’ Fun

“It’s a tough time of the year to be a fisherman.”
Seems like I hear something like this every day.

I tell people it’s just the dog days of summer. Just wait until the weather cools down and then “fishing” will turn into “catching.”
Now you all know why my wife calls me the biggest optimist she’s ever met.
The main problem I’ve had with fishing lately is consistency. I can go out one day and catch eight to 10 fish and the next day I might get just one or two bites.
Another thing that isn’t helping is the hydrilla that has spread all over the lake.
I was down by Lanier Point the other day and there was topped out hydrilla as far as I could see. The last I heard, there won’t be any chemical spraying until November to sometime in February.
Right now I can only think of a couple of places where you can actually fish in the Kissimmee grass lines. I guess that’s why you don’t see  many fishermen out on the water right now. Many are trying other lakes, hoping for better results.
Pan fish continue to hit pretty good.  Bluegills and shell crackers are being caught in fairly good numbers. The old standbys, worms and crickets should put some fish in the boat.
We need to get the high pressure system out of here, have the water cool down, less hydrilla, cooler nights, more cloud cover, moving water, some different baits, and maybe I need to get a new boat?
