The New York Artist Shop is hosting an artist reception on Friday featuring the works of  Calin Popescu.

The New York Artist Shop, 1124 New York Ave., St. Cloud, is hosting an artist reception on Friday from 5 to 9 p.m. featuring this month’s artist of the month, Calin Popescu
The Kissimmee artist’s works depict faraway paradises he said he wishes really existed. He calls them “mindscapes.”
“Painting is demanding and fully engaging however, for me is the most rewarding process,” Popescu said. “I conjure up landscapes and places I would like to go, have been or simply dreamed about and combine that memory on canvas, mixing colors with abandoned passion at night, like an alchemist.”
“The end result looks always like gold to me.”
A native of Transylvania (Romania), Popescu describes his artwork as a unique blend of American and European abstract art.
“My paintings do not tell stories. No literature is involved. However, there is a lot of music, dance, joy, exuberance, visual feast of emotions, a symphony of colors,” he said.
Popescu has a bachelor of fine arts degree in painting from the Institute of Fine Arts Bucharest and studied American abstract art at great length while in Romania.
In Bucharest, he also taught art and had several art exhibitions.
His artwork was later shown in New York City at The International Center, Horizon Gallery, Ariel Gallery in Soho and RIVAA Gallery in Roosevelt Island.
After a group show participation at “World Bank Main Atrium Gallery” in Washington DC, Florida’s warm weather lured him south.
While in Kissimmee, in addition to working in the hospitality industry and in the real estate business, he has also taught art forms and drawing at Valencia ComCollege.
Florida has proven to be a fertile ground for Popescu’s  inspiration and imagination.
Aside from a successful solo show in Dammard (France), he also had solo exhibits locally at Cafe Trastevere in Orlando, Winter Park Public Library, The Civic Theatre in Loch Haven, Fidelity Bank in Longwood and Osceola Center for The Arts.
Group exhibits to be also mentioned are: “Go Figure” at Oval Gallery Orlando, “Black Velvet” and “Year of the Ox” at Orlando City Hall Terrace Gallery and “The West End” at Valencia Community College.
He has paintings in various private collections: Europe, USA and Canada.
The New York Artists Shop hosts a free artist reception on the third Friday of every month. Light refreshments will be served.
