Kissimmee police arrested a student Monday for bringing a gun to a local religious school and for threatening fellow students with the gun to keep them from telling administrators.

Kissimmee police officers Monday arrived at Heritage Christian School, 1500 E. Vine St. in Kissimmee, around 1 p.m. in reference to a weapons violation. The principal told officers a 13-year-old student had brought a weapon onto campus.

The student had asked one of his 12-year-old classmates to hold the gun inside his book bag and place it in his locker. At lunch, the student asked the friend to retrieve the gun so he could show it off.

The student took the gun into the restroom and showed it to several students. After showing the students the gun, the 13-year-old boy threatened the students with the gun not to tell anyone.

School administration heard of the incident and was able to locate the gun inside the book bag of the 12-year-old student's locker. The gun was not loaded and no ammunition was located with the gun, according to spokeswoman Stacie Miller.

Both students were arrested and transported to the Kissimmee Police Department for questioning.

Based on the information received, the 13-year-old student was charged with possession of a weapon on school grounds, possession of a weapon by a child under the age of 18 and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill. He was transported to the Orange County Juvenile Detention Center where he is held on no bond, Miller said.

The 12-year-old friend was charged with possession of a weapon on school grounds and possession of a weapon by a child under the age of 18. He was released into his mother’s custody at the Kissimmee Police Department, Miller said.

“Thankfully this was gun was not loaded and the administration was made aware of this situation,” Kissimmee Police Chief Fran Iwanski said. “Students need to remember they can always contact the SPEAKOUT hotline to report any criminal activity on school grounds and they can remain anonymous.”

SPEAKOUT hotline was created by Crimeline and is designed to help students anonymously report threatening behavior that endangers themselves, their friends, their family or their campus. Students can report the behavior by calling 1-800-423-TIPS (8477) or text their tip to CRIMES (274637). All tips are completely anonymous.
