Katy Davis likes to swim.
“It’s my passion,” she said.
That explains how the Harmony High sophomore became a four-time Orange Belt Conference and 2A-7 district champion and helped the Lady Longhorns win their first team district championship.
“Katy was a major contributor. She had a huge impact on the successes that our team celebrated this year,” Coach Lori O’Rourke said.

Davis, the Osceola News-Gazette Female Swimmer of the Year, won individual conference championships in the 50 freestyle (26.73) and 500 free (5:42.11), and team titles with the 200 free relay (1:52.53) and 400 free relay (4:05.67) as the anchor swimmer.
She won the 50 free again at the district meet (27.07, 26.31 in the preliminaries) and also won the 100 free (57.70). She anchored the 200- and 400-free relays to district titles as well. At regionals, where the team placed sixth, she had her best time in the 50 free (26.14) and finished seventh.
Not bad work for a 16-year-old swimmer who began her career four short years ago in Miami.
“It is a late start for a swimmer. I started out as synchronized swimmer, then one day during one of our practices we did an exercise where we swam for speed and I really liked it,” she said. “I decided that that’s what I wanted to do.”
When her family moved to Osceola County a year  and a half ago, Davis was pleased to find an established and successful swimming program at Harmony.
“Everyone here was great. They were so welcoming, and I felt like I was a part of the team right away,” she said. “The team members and the coaches here are awesome.”
Davis specializes in the freestyle and backstroke. She is in no hurry, however, to try the more difficult stroke techniques such as the butterfly or the breast stroke.
“No, I really don’t know how they swim those,” Davis said with a laugh. “I’m strictly freestyle, and I don’t mind the backstroke. It’s a little hard to go straight (in the backstroke) at first, but with a lot of practice you figure it out.”
Davis said she likely will migrate toward the longer distance races as her swimming career continues.
“That’s the way I’m headed. It probably suits me the best,” she said.
Davis is swimming with the Kissimmee Swimming Association this winter, preparing for the USA Swimming Senior Championships in late February.
“We’re working like crazy,” she said. “You really don’t get a break. But, I don’t mind. I love it 100 percent. It’s my life.”
Davis said she’d like to eventually swim for major college power Florida.
“I know that’s going to be tough because the competition is unbelievable,” she said. “I’ve got a couple of years to train and improve, though. I’d love to swim there.”
