We sent an earlier letter to Santa but wanted to get another one in before he starts on his around-the-world deliveries. Our second Christmas wish list includes:
• That elected Democrats and Republicans on the national level agree to an extension of the payroll tax cut; letting it expire would take a considerable bite out of the paychecks of an estimated 160 million workers, something we should not do at this time.
• That soldiers returning from the war in Iraq and Afghanistan be able to find jobs in these difficult economic times and that they successfully reconnect with their families. We also ask that their injuries (both mental and physical) heal quickly.
• That the Osceola County Commission decisions to outsource Osceola Library System and courthouse security operations to private companies turn out to be all they were cranked up to be and that the changes will benefit not only taxpayers, but the employees whose jobs were privatized.
• That voters in 2012 turn out in higher numbers than in previous presidential election years. If the trend holds, there will be numerous candidates in local races, requiring voters to make important choices about the future of government in our two cities, the county and our county school system.
• That all the families who are homeless or living in extended stay motels in Osceola County find hope that things will be better in the future and that things do indeed improve.
• That workers in both the public and private sector who have been asked to do more over the last few years without corresponding wage or salary increases persevere in 2012 with the hope that conditions in the workplace will improve.
• That workable solutions to the downward spiral of businesses along West U.S. Highway 192 be found and that the seeds of an economic recovery for this corridor be planted.
• That the increased occurrence of domestic violence – and other crimes as well – that has accompanied the Great Recession subside quickly in the coming year as economic conditions improve.
• That we all not only be tolerant of diversity, but embrace it as a way to enrich and enliven the community.
• And that residents remain generous with their time in terms of volunteering and that donations increase to often-empty food banks.
