It's official: Spurs' assistant Sean Sweeney is Orlando Magic's next head coach

While he won't be able to check out the new digs for a bit, the Orlando Magic officially have a new head coach.

President of Basketball Operations Jeff Weltman announced Monday morning what others reported citing sources throughout the weekend: San Antonio Spurs assistant coach Sean Sweeney will replace Jamahl Mosley, who was fired following the team's seven-game playoff series loss to the Detroit Pistons in last month's Eastern Conference quarterfinals.

Sweeney will continue to coach with the Spurs through their NBA Finals run against the New York Knicks, which will begin Wednesday night in San Antonio.

This season has been Sweeney's first season with the Spurs after four years as an assistant coach with the Dallas Mavericks. Prior to that spent three seasons as an assistant with the Detroit Pistons (2018-21) following four years with the Milwaukee Bucks (2014-18). Sweeney began his NBA career with the Brooklyn Nets in 2011, starting as a video coordinator before transitioning to an assistant coaching position for the 2013-14 season.

Sweeney's college playing career included one season at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay before transferring to the University of St. Thomas (St. Paul), where he was a three-year starter and earned all-conference honors as a senior in 2005-06. He then served as a video coordinator, director of basketball operations and assistant coach for four college programs before reaching the NBA.
