LETTERS TO THE EDITOR -- The case of the disappearing St. Cloud lakefront ducks

Dear Editor:

I’ve lived on Lakeshore Boulevard in St. Cloud since 2001 where there have been Muscovy ducks along the entire lakefront as long as I can remember. Lo and behold, somewhere around the weekend of May 9-10, all the ducks disappeared and as of this writing, none have been seen.

I’m not the smartest person in the area but I’ve come to two possible explanations for this phenomenon: Aliens landed here in the middle of the night and the ducks were the most intelligent beings they met and took them back to their planet. We should seriously negotiate their return by offering them all the battery powered vehicles—bicycles, skateboards, scooters, etc.—that travel the lakefront sidewalk, despite all the signs stating that they are prohibited. Or …

The City of St. Cloud, in its infinite wisdom, decided to have the ducks removed because they impede the steady flow of traffic of those who found the shortcut from Narcoossee Road to the other side of St. Cloud, without having to use 13th Street and all its annoying traffic lights. All it would take would be one complaint and the City would capitulate to please these speeding drivers, since the ducks are an invasive species, but they hurt no one.

People walking the lakefront enjoy seeing them and feeding them. They aren’t going to run over you with an unlicensed, battery-powered vehicle. I’d like to hear an explanation from the city as to the disappearance of the ducks.
