TechCentral, the innovative makerspace located on the second floor of the Hart Memorial Library, has expanded its facilities with the addition of two new labs: the Memory Lab and Robotics Lab. Made possible with support from the Osceola Friends of the Library, these new spaces further enhance the array of resources available to library patrons.
The Memory Lab is equipped with state-of-the-art technology aimed at preserving precious memories. Patrons can convert old photos, home videos, and audio recordings into digital formats using equipment provided in the lab. Visitors can reserve time for self-service access with assistance available from trained technicians. Files can be saved onto USB flash drives, SD cards, or uploaded to cloud-based platforms like Dropbox or Google Drive.
The Memory Lab supports conversion from a wide range of formats including VHS tapes, DVDs, vinyl records, cassette tapes, printed photographs, and more. Its versatile photo and document scanner can even convert documents into editable text, making it a valuable resource for digitizing and preserving historical records.
TechCentral also introduces the Robotics Lab, which offers scheduled instructor-led classes and Open Lab Hours for handson exploration. Open Lab Hours are available Wednesdays and Thursdays from 5pm to 7pm, where patrons can reserve spots online and experiment with robotics kits such as LEGO WeDo 2.0, LEGO Mindstorm EV3, VEX Super Kits, littleBits, Arduino CTC 101, and soldering equipment.
Access to TechCentral and its facilities requires an Osceola library card. While the makerspace is primarily designed for patrons ages 12 and up, children ages 6-12 are welcome to use the space under the supervision of a parent or guardian.
