The Special Olympics USA Games are coming to our area June 5-12, with events at Osceola Heritage Park and ESPN Wide World of Sports.

It’s part of a 50th anniversary celebration for Special Olympics, and to celebrate, they’re offering a special pre-sale for the Games’ Opening Ceremony at Exploria Stadium.

The event will be produced by Disney Live Entertainment and feature appearances from celebrity Games a mbassadors, Superstar performers, the Parade of Athletes and the lighting of the Flame of Hope officially kicking off the Games.

The flame, brought to Orlando by the Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR), will begin its journey in Chicago on May 20. Locally, the Osceola County Sheriff ’s Office will conduct its own Torch Run to benefit Special Olympics on May 6, from the Sheriff ’s Office to Kissimmee Lakefront Park. (It was originally scheduled for April 1 and postponed due to inclement weather.)

“The 2022 Special Olympics USA Games are just a few short weeks away from kicking off in Orlando. We are honored to have such a tremendous team carrying the Flame of Hope to its final stop where it will shine bright during the entirety of the USA Games,” said Joe Dzaluk, President and CEO of the 2022 Special Olympics USA Games. “The torch will serve as a symbol of inclusion and hope during the USA Games, and we invite everyone to follow the Law Enforcement Torch Run as it makes its way through their cities on its way to ours.”

Also to mark the 50th anniversary, Special Olympics Florida will commission a one-of-a-kind art project honoring the founder of Special Olympics, Eunice Kennedy Shriver. The piece will embody the principles of inclusion, acceptance, and dignity for all. Special Olympics Florida seeks artists and input from its athletes and their supporters.
