Heat and humidity and thunderstorms are popping up every afternoon — you know the story. We have been locked into this common August pattern for quite a while, and now it looks like the tropics are going to start getting more active so our weather is likely to pick up even more before things get better. There are two systems that we are watching in the Atlantic, and the one entering the Caribbean has the potential to reach Florida,so we can’t let our guard down.
One of the best meteor showers of the year is coming Thursday (tonight) and early Friday morning. The shower is produced by Comet Swift-Tuttle, which was discovered in 1862. The Perseids are famous for producing a large number of bright meteors. The best viewing time will be from midnight to 2 a.m., although they can be seen any time that night and it would be best to look high in the sky to the north or northeast. The crescent moon will set early in the evening leaving us with dark skies for perfect viewing — if the clouds will just give us a break!
That bright planet that you’ll be able to see in the western sky after Sunset is Venus and it will be joined this week by the Moon.
