Break up
By Jacqueline C., age 15
Tears on a pillow
Trimmed in lace
Dew on a tulip
With petals closed
Ocean spray on an unclaimed beach blanket
Where they used to lie
Soak in the sun
While beach waves chased after them
But sometimes they’d let them catch up
That was their first mistake
Their second: investing too much in words
Because those disappear
Like drops in the ocean
And I guess they were never really made to last
He always treated her like she was made out of glass
But she was more like a bench with birch boards
Always thrashed by high tide;
Every time the waves crashed
Standing a little stronger
He was the one the waves consumed
Sinking in his own words
A shell at the mercy of its ocean
Always ending up somewhere new;
Every time the waves crashed
Drifting toward defeat
It ended with the roses in spring unvased
It ended with a burned box of photos
It ended with a love that had drowned
Because it became too tired to swim
It ended with a girl up to her knees in water, her heels crushing shells
And a boy leaning on a new birch bench
Only a mile of sand between them
You . . .
By Lily C., age 15
Whenever I see you I feel nervous, my pulse races like I've just run a marathon and I feel so happy. Often I make a fool out of myself but that’s okay, because just being with you makes it okay. You seem so perfect...Your smile lights up my world like the sun, without it I might go dark and fade away...You are the only one keeping me sane, helping me to stay alive, without you I could die. You’re funny and creative but also steadfast like an anchor keeping me from drifting away. You are all the good things in this wretched world, a rose and I? The stem with its thorns. How did such a thing like me get to lift up a thing like you? I don’t know, but what I do know is that I will lift you up, raise you above the darkness and I will try with all my soul to protect you. Our love is like yin and yang beautiful together but incomplete apart. Let your emotions flow like water do not let them dam up inside of you. Soiling your clean mind,I will do my best to help you clear your mind of all these trivial things. The sacred bond we share can’t be broken by mere force It is one of these world’s wonders. If I’m locked away without you I could survive knowing that you are love and love is stronger than any darkness. Nothing should come between it and break it . I am insane but insane in love. So bring the tears, the fights,yelling, the screaming,the pain bring the rain...because together we can face anything.
