Victim dies in early Tuesday west Osceola shooting; suspect now charged with 2nd-degree murder

The victim in an early Tuesday shooting on the west side of the county has died, and the suspected shooter is now charged with murder.

According to the Osceola County Sheriff's Office, 26-year-old Timothy James Meyer, was pronounced dead Tuesday night.

The suspect in the case, Raul Perez, 53, who was originally charged with attempted murder, has had his charges upgraded to 2nd degree Murder. He remains held in the Osceola County Jail with no bond. He is scheduled to make his first appearance in front of a judge Wednesday afternoon.

The shooting remains under investigation. According to police, deputies responded to the Extended Day Suites on West U.S. Highway 192 near Sherberth Road just before 5 a.m. Tuesday and found a male, later identified as Meyer, with a gunshot wound to the head.

According to an arrest affidavit obtained by the News-Gazette, police say Perez advised Meyer was approaching him in an aggressive manner, at which time he pulled a concealed firearm he was carrying and shot the victim. The report said Perez then placed the firearm on the ground and was shortly later detained by law enforcement without incident.

As a witness, Perez's wife stated in the report the two were on their daily walk with their dog near the hotel they were staying at when she witnessed a tall man dressed all in black walking directly towards them, "waving his hands in a suspicious, conspiratorial manner," before the suspect shot the victim.

Video footage from a nearby truck showed the victim walking toward the couple before the suspect pulled his weapon and shot one time, the affidavit said.
