The city of St. Cloud, along with its sponsors, Duke’s Brewhouse, Shamrock Auto Body, and OUC, The Reliable One (Orlando Utilities Commission), will be hosting its annual Unity in the Community event on Saturday, Feb. 22, at the St. Cloud lakefront.

As stated on its website, the event is designed to celebrate diversity and community. It promises an array of information, entertainment, and activities for children, families and individuals. Admission is free to the public.

Music will fill the air throughout the event. In between live musical performances a DJ, in keeping with the theme, will play music from a variety of genres.

Erin Jenks, special events manager for St. Cloud Parks and Recreation, said that this event has grown in popularity throughout its more than 25-year history, and had to be relocated from a local park to the lakefront to accommodate its expansion. More than 1,200 are expected to attend throughout the four-hour event.

A wide range of local organizations, community educators and businesses will be present, and many will be hosting exhibition booths where they will be sharing information about their respective roles and contributions to the community. Participants will present information about such diverse topics as dance, wildlife conservation, insurance, utilities, and more.

Children and adults will be able to participate in a literal “hands on” activity by helping to build the event’s new diversity tree project. The “tree” will be constructed on plywood and the leaves will be formed from painted handprints of the participants. It will be saved and brought to succeeding year’s events to be built upon.

The police and fire departments will be on hand and will be participating in the “touch-a-truck” activity for the children. Children will be allowed to climb on a fire truck or press buttons and honk the horn in a police vehicle and ask questions to learn about how these vehicles work and how these departments serve the community.

Additional activities for the children include face painting and bounce houses. For everyone to enjoy, there will be a sports car show and food vendors, including Duke’s Brewhouse and Kona Ice.
