A key construction milestone was achieved Thursday when a “topping out” ceremony took place at the Orlando Health’s St. Cloud Hospital. A steel I-beam, painted white and signed by hospital leaders and medical team members, was hoisted into place by a crane to complete the connection between the existing hospital building and a new annex.
“This is the first expansion by Orlando Health since coming to St. Cloud five years ago,” said Marc Lillis, Chief Operating Officer for Orlando Health St. Cloud Hospital.
The new two-story, 20,000-square-foot expansion will house state-of-the-art cardiac catheterization labs, a new capability at the St. Cloud location. The new facility will allow cardiologists to diagnose and treat heart attacks and other heat-related conditions, including procedures to open blocked arteries to restore circulation and halt further damage to heart tissue. Currently, St. Cloud area residents needing this kind of emergency cardiac treatment must seek care in other locations, such as Kissimmee or Orlando.
Included in the expansion is a new 10-bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU), which comes on top of 18 new Emergency Room lower-order treatment rooms, which became operational earlier this year, and have significantly increased the hospital’s emergency treatment capacity. The treatment rooms were the first new beds added to the hospital’s capacity since 2018.
Bermello Ajamil of Orlando designed the hospital expansion, and the project management and construction contractors are Adena Corporation of Lakeland Florida, and Barton Malow of Orlando. Construction on the new space will be completed in October 2025 and is expected to become operational in January 2026.
