The Florida Press Association announced the nominees for its 2021 Weekly Newspa per Contest, and the Osceola News-Gazette was well represented.

Your local paper received nine nominations for awards in reporting, layout and overall excellence categories.

The awards are for stories and reporting done in 2021. The FPA will announce its first, second and third-place awards during the 2022 Florida Media Conference held August 4-5 in Jacksonville.

The News-Gazette, in Division A (the largest of three based on circulation), was nominated for General Excellence, a reflection of the entire paper, as well as for its website, AroundOsceola.com.

Reporter Charlie Reed was nominated in Breaking News, for her story on the Liberty High School resource officer shown on camera detaining a student and the ensuing aftermath; and in Local Government Reporting, for her series on the ongoing activity at NeoCity.

Editor Ken Jackson earned reporting nominations in Education News, for a story on the Osceola School District mask mandate discussions in the fall; and in Online Breaking News, for real-time coverage of the verdict in the murder case of victim Nicole Montalvo.

Former Editor Brian McBride earned Spot News Photo nomination for a photo of a panhandler in a local intersection that went with a story on an ordinance regarding such behavior.

Freelancer sports writer J. Daniel Pearson earned a Sports Column nomination with his personal reflections on former Florida State football Coach Bobby Bowden, just days before the coach passed away.

Production Manager Angelique Priore was nominated for Front Page Makeup, an award for excellence in presentation.
