New North Osceola American Legion Post 412 Installs Officers

Post seeks permanent home

Recently, Kissimmee Legion Post 10, one of the oldest posts in Florida and the U.S., installed its first woman commander in its lengthy 90-year history.

Last Saturday, one of the newest posts in the state and country installed its officers.

South Orlando Post 412 held their annual ceremony at the historic Boggy Creek Resort and RV Park on the north shore of East Lake Toho just north of Kissimmee. A total of 19 officers were sworn in, including the Post’s officers, and officers for the Auxiliary and the Riders.

During his comments to the membership after being sworn in to continue as Post Commander, Bill Musto stressed the American Legion’s focus on family, and the Post’s need to attract the adult children of Post members to form a Sons of the American Legion group as one of the pillars of their organization.

“We have almost 90 members now after three years, getting our own post building is our biggest challenge going forward,” said Musto. He also expressed the Post’s deep appreciation for the support of the Boggy Creek Resort and RV Park for the use of their pavilion for Saturday’s ceremony.

Unlike most Legion posts, Post 412 does not have a permanent home, yet. The post has members from Buenaventura Lakes, East Lake, and Narcoossee, in Osceola County, as well as Lake Nona and South Orlando, and members are free to choose which post they want to be a member of.

As with many veterans’ groups, their thoughts are never far from the people now serving on active duty. In March, the Post sponsored the 16th annual regional Central Florida Ride for Our Troops, a motorcycle event that raised funds for the Just Our Soldiers’ Helpers (JOSH) military charity. The JOSH program seeks to support U.S. military members deployed to remote locations by “preparing and shipping care packages consisting of high-quality snacks, food, and hygiene product, one care package at a time” according to the charity’s website.

“We hope to begin supporting the Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) at area high schools, including Toho and Lake Nona, and presenting Legion award medals,” Musto said.

As Post 412 grows, Legion members hope to provide funds for more good causes.
