HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING
The resurgence of the Harmony Wrestling Program continued this past weekend, as the Longhorns came through with their third impressive tournament performance of the year by tying for second place at the Ron Peters Tournament of Champions at Lake Mary High School.
Thirty-two teams participated in the bracket tournament, with Class 3A state power Southwest Miami winning the tournament with 303 points. Harmony and Palm Bay Magnet School were tied for second at 207.5; Haggerty was fourth with 200.5.
Three other Osceola County schools participated in the event with Celebration placing 19th (44 team points), Gateway 20th (41) and St. Cloud 27th (21).
Harmony’s high finish was due to its depth.
The Longhorns captured two third place finishes, two fourth place finishes and four fifth place finishes – scoring team points in 14 different weight classes.
Aiden Poe went 5-1 in the tournament to take third place at 115-pounds. Poe won his first three matches before losing by technical fall to Hagerty’s Jason Shaw in the semifinals. In the consolation bracket, he defeated Lake Nona’s Michael Prado. 17-0, to advance to the third place match where he pinned Boone’s Jason Lyttle.
The Longhorns other third place finisher was Darren Davis at 287. As with Poe, Davis advanced to the semifinals where he lost a narrow 3-1 decision to Lakeland’s Willie Lampkin. He would defeat Gainesville Buchholtz’s Jacob Robinson in the consolation semifinals before pinning Boone’s Daniel Kelly in the third place match at the 3:40 mark of the second period.
Fourth place finishers for Harmony included Sean Seery (162-pounds) and Will Jackson (172). Fifth place finishers for the Longhorns included Tanner Hinman (108), John Mcnichols (128), Fletcher Small (147) and Marshall Smith (182).
Celebration’s top finisher was Van Paul Zayas, who won the fifth place match with an injury forfeit over Masters Academy’s Brandon Cody. Both of Zayas’ losses in the tournament were decisions to River Ridge’s Domminick Smith, a 10-6 loss in the second round and a 9-3 loss in the consolation semifinals.
Kyjaun Allen, a standout on the Gateway football team, had the top finish for the Panthers – taking fifth place in the 287-pound weight class. After receiving a bye in the first round, Allen recorded two victories via pinfall, before losing a hard-fought 6-3 decision to Palm Bay Magnet’s Carlos Gerardino. He lost a 6-4 decision in the consolation finals before pinning Gainesville Buchholtz’s Jacob Robinson in the match for fifth place.
St. Cloud did not place any wrestlers in the top six, but received six team points from Spencer Oneil
(184) and five points from Jared George (128).
