FHP: Fatal crash closed State Road 60 west of Yeehaw Junction much of Thursday

Florida Highway Patrol has reported that a crash that occurred Thursday morning on two-lane State Road 60, in which one car attempted to pass another, led to a head-on collision that left a female driver and a four-month old child dead and four others in that car and the other impacted severely injured.

The crash happened around 11 a.m. just west of Peavine Road, about eight miles west of Yeehaw Junction. According to FHP reports, the 22-year-old driver of a Nissan Altima was traveling eastbound on 60 when she entered the westbound lanes to pass another car. She passed into the path of a westbound Mazda SUV, and they struck head on. The Altima left the road and overturned. The driver and a four-month old in a child seat in the back seat were pronounced deceased on the scene. Two other passengers, a female of unknown age and a 1-year-old girl, also in a car seat, were flown to an Orlando hospital in critical condition. All occupants of the Altima were from Miami, FHP said.

The occupants of the Mazda, a male driver and female passenger of unknown ages, were flown to Holmes Regional Medical Center in serious condition. Two other vehicles struck debris from the crash; their drivers were not injured. 

State Road 60 was closed until after 5 p.m. for the crash investigation, which is ongoing.
