When there’s a hurricane bearing down on Osceola County — recall Hurricanes Ian and Nicole in 2022, Idalia in 2023 and Helene and Milton in 2024 — there’s a lot going on in terms of preparing your home and family to ride it out.
Something easy to do now is to trim those trees and limbs to keep them away from windows, gutters and roofs when the wind starts to blow.
If you can make those trims this week, the City of Kissimmee is arranging to pick them up for you and get those limbs out of the way with a free yard waste pickup opportunity.
If you can do it this weekend and get your eligible yard waste to the curb by 7 a.m. on Monday, June 29, 2026, the city will come pick it up early next week from residential properties that receive curbside yard waste collection in the city limits. (does not apply to commercial properties). If your garbage cans have a City of Kissimmee logo on them, you qualify.
Each household is eligible for free collection of up to six cubic yards of yard waste (about three pickup-truck loads). Cut your branches or limbs to less than six inches in diameter and four feet in length.
Grass trimmings, leaves, weeds, and small tree branches will be picked up in this special collection — no garbage, bulk items, furniture, or construction debris.
Yard waste must be unbagged, in loose stacks at the curb (not in the street), and keep the piles at least four feet away from cars, fire hydrants, mailboxes and drainage inlets.
Clearing excess vegetation and trimming trees can help reduce storm-related hazards and keep neighborhoods safer during severe weather — and free up your time to assemble goods like bottled water, canned goods and outdoor cooking supplies like grills, and protect the rest of your property.
