Wednesday was a big day for seniors involved with the Senior Congregate Dining Club, provided through the Osceola Council on Aging.  Branching out from their normal day-to-day activities, seniors instead met at Big Toho Marina in Kissimmee. A day of fishing, friends and a few catches along the way commenced.

The hospitality of Big Toho Marina allowed some Osceola County seniors to have a day they will not soon forget.

Cristian Chong, nutrition manager at the Osceola Council on Aging, explained the day was, “Really about getting the seniors out in the sun and out of their normal setting.  In today, they can enjoy some music while having a chance to cast a line and real in a big one.”

While some seniors fished, many listened to tunes being put out for them by a live DJ, while under the shade of the Big Toho wraparound porch. “Why Can’t We Be Friends” by War and “Limbo” were two songs that the participants of Fishing Day really enjoyed.

After the music concluded, a Bingo game of massive proportions was started.  Seniors gathered around tables on the porch for their chance to say that magic word, “Bingo.” “It was truly great to get out of the house and socialize with my friends this morning,” Fishing Day participant, Miarta Martinez relayed. “And, we got to play my favorite game, Bingo.”

Some seniors did decide to battle the fish and the bright sun though, and fortune favored them. By mid-day, Lonnie Drummond had reeled in six largemouth bass with one weighing almost five pounds.

Many of the participants at Fishing Day are regular participants in the Osceola Council on Aging’s Senior Congregate Dining Club. Meeting daily, Congregate provides Osceola County seniors a chance to share in fellowship with friends, while enjoying a free, nutritious meal.
