Memorial Day is an American holiday observed on the last Monday in May. This holiday honors men and woman who died while serving in the U.S. military. It became an official Federal holiday in 1971. A message to high school graduating Poinciana seniors in both Polk and Osceola Counties: you have free post high school opportunities available to you!
Through the Osceola County Commission, Osceola Prosper is available to all high school graduates in Osceola County, including public schools, charter schools, private schools and home-school grads who enroll at Valencia College or Osceola Technical College. Through Osceola Prosper, graduates can go to Valencia College to earn an Associate in Arts (AA) or an Associate in Science (AS) degree or complete one of the Accelerated Skills Training Program or a Technical Certificate program from Osceola Technical College.

Polk County Public Schools has a new opportunity available to Class of 2022 graduates. The Open Door Grant may pay up to two-thirds of tuition, fees, books and other materials up to $3,000 at Travis or Ridge Technical College. Students can earn industry certification in a variety of high-demand professions, including firefighting, automotive repair, welding. Health care and more. The student must enroll with enough time to complete course work and assignments by Sept. 30, 2023. Did you know that the Osceola Library System now offers a professional Social Worker as an outreach to connect citizens with community resources, programs and services? Social Worker Matthew Jarmon will offer individual and family assistance with referrals to different agencies. Jarmon will be available at the Poinciana Library (101 N. Doverplum Ave.) from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. every other Saturday.
The Social Worker project is funded by the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act from the Institute of Museum and Library Service and administered by the Department of State’s Division of Library and Information Services. Some of the referral assistance provided includes Mental Health and Counseling, Substance Abuse, Housing Assistance and Houselessness, Health Care, Elder Care and Food Assistance.
