St. Cloud Theatre Company will present Disney’s “Newsies,” directed by Alex Moore.
This triumphant Broadway blockbuster opens Thursday, March 5, and runs through Sunday, March 8.
This feel-good, family-favorite musical will be performed in the Susan E. Hill Performing Arts
Center at St. Cloud High School. Tickets start at $5 for students and $12 for adults, plus senior and military discounts. Tickets are on sale to the general public.
Featuring a cast, crew, and live orchestra of more than 80 students from St. Cloud High, Middle, and Elementary, this musical will be a crowd favorite for the entire family. Set in turn-of-the century New York City, Newsies is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a band of teenaged newsies who dream of a better life far from the hardship of the streets. When titans of publishing raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack rallies newsies from across the city to fight for what’s right and seize the day.
“Newsies” is inspired by the real-life “Newsboy Strike of 1899,” when newsboy Kid Blink led a band of orphan and runaway newsboys on a two-week-long action against Pulitzer, Hearst, and other powerful newspaper publishers.
Newsies addresses ageold themes of social injustice, exploitative labor practices, and David-versus-Goliath struggles as the young learn to harness their power against corruption.
Based on the 1992 Disney motion picture with a screenplay by Bob Tzudiker & Noni White, “Newsies” has grown into a cult phenomenon.
It became a 2012 Broadway hit with a Tony Award-winning score by Alan Menken (Little Shop of Horrors, Sister Act) and Jack Feldman and a book by Tony Award-winner Harvey Fierstein (Kinky Boots).
Originally produced on Broadway by Disney Theatrical Productions in 2012, this production marks the first high school production in Central Florida. “Newsies” features memorable songs like “Carrying the Banner,” “Seize the Day,” and “Santa Fe.” Newsies has non-stop choreography, thrills, and a timeless message, perfect for the whole family.
