Poinciana News — End the month with Love Makes Me Grow, library events

Love Makes Me Grow’s mission is to teach communities the value and importance of living off the land. This non-profit organization offers Sunday Gardening Classes. The next class will be held Sunday March 26 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Chestnut Elementary School (4399 Chestnut St.) Families are invited to participate in creating, maintaining and harvesting the community garden.

March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. This is the second deadliest cancer of men and women combined in the US and is estimated to be No. 2 among 20-49 year-olds by 2030. The Colorectal Alliance and Walmart Health are offering free screening kits to residents at their local Walmart Health Centers. Screening kits can be picked up at the Walmart Health Center (904 Cypress Pkwy.) on Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12 noon.

Wrap up Women’s History Month at the Poinciana Library (101 N. Doverplum Ave.) on Saturday with Makers Café: Mini Portraits. Paint a mini portrait of a well-known woman throughout history. Supplies will be provided. Makers Café will be from 2-4 p.m.

Don’t forget about the Community Blood Drive on Wednesday, March 29 from 1-6 p.m. Be a hero and save a life by donating blood. OneBlood’s Big Red Bus will be at the library parking lot to receive your donation. Face coverings must be worn. For more information, go to OneBlood.org.

Next month, make sure to hop on over to the Library from April 1-15 to find the Library Rabbit. A 3-D printed figure of the Library Rabbit will be hidden daily at the Poinciana Library. Tell staff where it is located to receive a free book reward (while supplies last).

All Library programs are free and open to the public.

 

The Poinciana Council will host a scholarship awards luncheon for the students that have been selected as its 2023 scholarship recipients. This lunch will be catered and hosted by Poinciana High School culinary students. The awards luncheon will be held on April 19 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Networking and registration will begin at 11 a.m. The fee is $25 for Chamber members, $30 for non-members.
