Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month at the Poinciana Library

Hispanic Heritage Month runs from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15. Here’s some events at the Poinciana Library (101 N. Doverplum Ave.) that will help you celebrate.

Spot the Flag, a game that will take place at the library for the entire Hispanic Heritage Month. Locate and identify 20 Hispanic flags hidden throughout the library for a chance to win an Isabel Allende autographed book. Allende, whose works sometimes contain aspects of the genre magical realism, is known for novels such as The House of the Spirits (La Casa de Los Espíritus) and City of the Beasts (La Ciudad de Las Bestias). Allende has been called «the world’s most widely read Spanish-language author.” The winner of the Spot the Flag game will be selected on Oct. 16.

Loteria Game Time is on Sept. 15 from 4-5 p.m. Learn how to play this Mexican bingo-style game of chance. Winners will receive their own Loteria gift box set.

Put your dancing shoes on! Salsa for Beginners takes place on Sept. 20 and 27 from 5-6:30 p.m. Learn the basics of Salsa dancing with Vanessa Rodriquez of Kissimmee Latin Dance Academy. No partner? No problema! Couples and individuals are welcome to participate.

Stop by the library on Sept. 21 for a Take and Make. Taino Symbol Tile kits are available for pickup (while supplies last). Uncover the meaning of some of the most recognized Taino petroglyph symbols as you create a wooden tile keepsake. If you are unable to pickup a kit, download the flyer at bit. ly/Taino21. Recommended supplies: wooden craft square, permanent marker and Taino symbol sheet.

You’ve played the game, now make the game! Makers Café Personalized Dominos happens on Sept. 24 from 2-4 p.m. Personalize your own domino set in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. Supplies will be provided.

Shake things up! Makers Café: DIY Maracas will be on Oct. 8 from 2-4 p.m.

Wrap up Hispanic Heritage Month at the library on Oct. 15 from 2-4 p.m. with Festival de Arte, Musica y Literatura Hispano, celebrating cultural diversity alongside talented local artists.

All library events are free and open to the public.
