When Hurricanes Ian and Nicole swept through Central Florida last year, most of us here in Central Florida immediately jumped into planning mode—gathering supplies, filling the tank with gas and keeping one eye on the weather channel.

“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6) It’s so very hard to watch or read the news these days. Too many nations continue to battle each other in either physical or economic arenas. Too many children are insecure about where their next meal is coming from. Too many dreams are shattered and too many loves are lost.

The holiday season can bring joy and stress, which create an unhealthy temptation to drink a lot of alcohol. During the festive season, some drink to celebrate and socialize, while others drink excessively because it may help them feel less depressed, alone, bored, or fit in.

As the holiday season approaches, students across the country are wrapping up papers and exams for a long holiday break. For many, it is a time to rest, recharge and catch up with friends and family. It can also be an important opportunity for the adults in students’ lives to check in about their mental health and wellness.

The need for youth to speak up and make their voices heard about issues they care about is as important as ever, which is why Students Working Against Tobacco (SWAT) is leading the way in the fight against the tobacco industry and the addictive products that target youth.

Many people underestimate the impact that mental illness can have on an individual or family. It can be difficult to admit that you have a mental health problem in your life. Secondly, it can be just as difficult in getting the people you know to understand your situation without making any kinds of judgments.

We all have a role in society. In my case, reporters report, and editors edit.

It’s time to unite our voices to call for a change that could save millions of lives in the generations to come. We can work together to craft a future without dangerous menthol additives in cigarettes, preventing people from starting to smoke and supporting people across our state who are ready to quit.
