If you’ve listened to him on the Jim Colbert Show on Real Radio 104.1, you can hear the humor Rauce Padgett brings to the program.

Well, now you can see his brand of humor live this weekend at Porky’s Comedy Club.

The stand-up comedian, who also is deep into sketch comedy (his skit “A Baby Boomer vs. a Millennial” has been viewed 3.6 million times on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ed-5Zzdbx0E), described his comedy as “straight sugar,” “not a lot of bread,” with “a splash of zany.”

What does he mean by that? It means he’s not going to try to change your view on any issues.

“I’m not hitting you with politics. I’m hitting you with something that is going to make you laugh,” Padgett, 30, said. “That’s really my number one focus.”

Where does he draw his material from?

“Anything that makes me laugh definitely gets put on a piece of paper,” Padgett said. “It always comes from a place of what do I find funny and why do I find it funny.’

The second hurdle after that is to refine it down into a “gem.”

So why does he love doing comedy so much?

It’s the “dance between the audience and the comedian,” Padgett said.

“It’s being creative and knowing that it’s always a rush,” he added.

The allure also is that there’s a bit of a danger to it because every comedian has bombed in their career, he noted.

“Every time a comedian goes up, there definitely is a sense of risk and that is the dragon to chase,” Padgett said.

Bombing actually is how he started his craft. At age 20, he tried out for an acting position for a show at Universal Studios in Orlando. He did a monologue, but he knew it wasn’t good, and didn’t get the job.

“I was happy to be selfaware that, that is not going to get me hired, and I need to get on a stage ASAP,” Padgett said.

When did he know he could make a career out of comedy?

It was the first time he did a 20-minute set. He was doing comedy for a couple of months, when a local headliner asked him to open the show. He killed.

“Once the 20 minute set went really, really well and I was fist-pumping in the parking lot, that’s when I realized, ‘you know, I think I could do this,’” Padgett said.

If you listen to The Jim Colbert Show, you know he does a segment called Rauce Thoughts on each program at about 6 p.m. It could either be a humorous take on his life experiences or just some creative, hilarious thoughts. It’s where his comedy really shines on the show.

What does it take to come up with something each day?

“Coffee and about two hours,” Padgett said. “Sometimes they are incredibly easy to do, other times they end up taking an unfortunate amount of time.”

The segment even makes his comedy act sometimes.

This will be his second appearance at Porky’s. He’ll be there Friday and Saturday, with the show starting at 8 p.m.

“I know the last couple of months have been terrible for a lot of us,” Padgett said. “But I do know your night will be better if you come out to the show. Personal guarantee.”
